Granite medians going in, soon to hold beautiful landscaping

Granite medians are now going in between Stratford Drive and Lenox Parkway. These medians will be landscaped with lush greenery, beautifying the boulevard while easing your drive by limiting the number of left turns.

You will also see mast arm poles being installed throughout the Phase II region. This will reduce unsightly utility lines, improving the view of offices, hotels, and storefronts along the sidewalk.

North side of Peachtree now walkable throughout Phase II

You may now enjoy an unimpeded walk along the north side of the Peachtree Boulevard Phase II thanks to the completion of the new and wider sidewalk. The new blacktop in the southbound lanes is providing a smooth ride along the expanded curb line.

We will soon turn our attention to starting the landscaped median that will add beauty and consistent flow through all of Phase II.

Paving, Wall Show Signs of Progress

With large parts of the sidewalk in place, our contractor is paving the southbound lanes, making for a smooth ride past Phipps Plaza and Lenox Square Mall. The wall going up south of Lenox Square Mall’s main entrance gives a hint as to how far back the tree-lined sidewalk will be when the transformation is complete. Strolling through the busiest part of Buckhead will become an even more pleasant experience.

Sidewalk Almost Finished in Front of Maggiano's

Peachtree Transformation  - The walk to Maggiano's is about to become more pleasant. The 11-foot-wide sidewalk along that stretch of Peachtree is very close to completion. Our contractor also intends to widen Peachtree Road along the north side in time for the Peachtree Road Race on the Fourth of July.

Sidewalk on North Side of Peachtree Almost Complete

The 11-foot-wide sidewalk along the north side of Peachtree is almost complete. Lined with willow oak trees and a landscaped buffer, the sidewalk will provide a pleasant walk from beyond Phipps Plaza south past Piedmont. New asphalt for the widened southbound lanes is set to be laid in two weeks.

Sidewalk Now Lining Phipps Plaza on North Side of Peachtree

Imagine a pleasant, shaded walk from Phipps Plaza, past Lenox Square Mall, to catch the train at the Buckhead MARTA station. It is in the not-too-distant future. Installation of the new, wider sidewalk in front of Phipps is almost complete. It will be set back from the road by a landscaped buffer and lined with shade trees. Granite curbing now lines almost the entire north side of Phase II of the Peachtree Boulevard transformation.

Fiber optic cables and other utilities are also going in, mainly at night to minimize disruptions.

Granite curb going in, followed by new, wider sidewalk

Following the holiday break and a week of snow, progress on the Peachtree Boulevard transformation is back at full speed. Crews are installing the granite curbs you may have noticed stacked just north of Maggiano's.

Before installation, these curbs are more than 15 inches tall (the former Buckhead CID ED called them the "Cliffs of Dover")! Once installed below grade, however, only six inches will be exposed, forming an attractive and sturdy transition from the road to the sidewalk buffer.

Granite curb going in, followed by new, wider sidewalk

We're seeing a flurry of activity along Peachtree to ensure excellent progress before we scale back for the holidays. Several retaining walls are now complete, so we turn our attention to installing granite curbing on the north side of Peachtree at Stratford Road. When that is complete in the next two weeks, we will pour the new, wider sidewalk.

Widening of Peachtree's north side taking shape

Phase II of the Peachtree Boulevard transformation is making visible progress. Aside from the moving of utilities and installation of storm drains, new retaining walls are going up, and the widening of Peachtree’s north side is beginning to take shape. One of the results will be the straightening of the Stratford Road “shift” that has confused southbound drivers for years.

Peachtree Boulevard transformation Phase II underway

Another stretch of Atlanta’s signature street is about to undergo a stunning transformation. Phase II of the Peachtree Boulevard transformation has begun, extending from the Buckhead MARTA station north past Phipps Plaza. After several weeks of utility work, crews have begun removing trees along the route, all to be replaced with 85 quality oak shade trees. Those trees will grow about one foot per year, up to 35 feet.

A look at Phase I (from the other side of Piedmont Road to the MARTA overpass) shows how quickly the new trees we are adding will grow to provide a lush, shaded vista along Peachtree in Buckhead.

Back to work following the extended winter break

After a holiday lane closure moratorium and a week of snow, the Peachtree Boulevard transformation is forging ahead. Crews are installing the granite curbs you may have noticed stacked just north of Maggiano's. Before installation, these curbs are more than 15 inches tall (the former Buckhead CID ED called them the "Cliffs of Dover")! Mayor Franklin cuts ribbon on Peachtree Boulevard Phase I

The Peachtree Boulevard Transformation from Maple Drive to the Buckhead MARTA station is complete! Today, Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin joined community and business leaders to cut the ribbon on phase I of the transformation.

“I know that Buckhead is setting the standard,” Franklin said. “Buckhead is a part of our community that prides itself on setting very high standards for livability for quality of life, and I know this project is going to set a new high standard for Atlanta.”

Walking along this stretch of Peachtree in Buckhead now means wider sidewalks protected by landscaped buffers and shaded by dozens of willow oaks. Planted medians ease the way across the new crosswalks with time-displayed signals. Better lighting improves the view at night. The choice to walk in Buckhead just got easier.

The transformation allows Peachtree to live up to its reputation as Atlanta’s “signature street,” making it a destination, not just a throughway.

“We want to get people out of cars by giving them an inviting place to walk,” said Buckhead neighborhood activist Sally Silver, who was instrumental in the conception of the transformation, which began in the mid ‘90s. “Put some trees and benches and some street lamps between you and that car coming down the highway, and it increases your comfort level. It makes people feel more welcome to be out there.”

Phase I is only the beginning. Phase II is longer and extends from the MARTA bridge to Roxboro Road north of Phipps Plaza. The Buckhead CID is working with GDOT to acquire right-of-way through purchase and donation. Pending the release of state funds, development of Phase II is set to begin in 2008.

Median taking shape quickly

The centerpiece of the Peachtree Boulevard transformation is taking shape at a quick pace. Crews are working day and night to install segments past Piedmont down to Maple Drive. The medians will be landscaped and lined with trees, improving safety for pedestrians and drivers.

Crews are also sandblasting and sealing sidewalks through out project. Tree installation will resume in October.

Rendering becoming reality

This image is starting to look familiar. The median at Peachtree and Piedmont is going in, and the elegant traffic signal mast arms are in place. They extend across the travel lanes, eliminating the need for unsightly hanging wires. Phase I has 15 of these, eight of which will have a street light attached to the top.
Phase I of the Peachtree Boulevard transformation is set for completion this fall.

Boulevard Phase One leveling off

Moving through Buckhead, you now see the blacktop of the new beautiful road being completed in both directions from Piedmont north to the MARTA station. The additional turn lanes at Piedmont will be a great improvement to the intersection.

The landscaped median now extending south to Piedmont will create better traffic flow and pedestrian crossing.
