With the holidays approaching, major construction activities are slowing down but will pick back up on January 8th. During the day, workers will continue to improve the sidewalks and traffic control systems that will make Buckhead safer for pedestrians. The utility relocations have made significant progress and are almost finished. They are expected to be completed around mid-December. At night, work will continue on the storm water system. Once the system is complete, construction will begin on the water vault located in the Tower Place driveway and a new traffic island. In addition to the regularly scheduled officers that direct traffic at intersections, more officers with longer shifts will help with added holiday traffic on Peachtree at the entrance to Lenox Square.
The Peachtree Boulevard transformation is the major enhancement of a stretch of Peachtree Road in Buckhead into a more livable, walkable, bikable and drivable promenade. The transformation will allow Peachtree to live up to its reputation as Atlanta’s “signature street.” It will become a destination, not just a throughway.Information is available at the new Web site: http://www.peachtreeboulevard.com/.

Peachtree Boulevard is changing everyday. The "move to underground" which started in August is almost done. Several utility poles have already been removed on the south side of Peachtree near Caribou Coffee. More poles will be removed from the north side by late November. Several utility companies like Geogia Power, Bellsouth, ATT, MCI, and many others have been working overtime to make this happen.
You can find out more about the Transformation of Peachtree Boulevard into a beautiful walkable, livable, and driveable place on their website at www.peachtreeboulevard.com!

Enthusiam for curbs. A visible sign of progess in the Peachtree Boulevard transformation... new granite curbs now line portions of Phase I near Terminus. They look very tall now (some are 24 inches high), but once the new asphalt goes in, they will extend just six inches above the surface, providing an attractive edge to the landscaped buffer between the road and sidewalk.
As you know, the Peachtree Boulevard transformation is the major enhancement of a stretch of Peachtree Road in Buckhead into a more livable, walkable, bikable and drivable promenade. Peachtree in Buckhead is changing so much, you may have missed the news about an exciting recent development. The Buckhead CID has announced that all utilities in Phase I of the transformation will be buried underground. In total, more than three miles of utilities will vanish, improving the view and making the transformation that much more magnificent.

Creators of the Peachtree Boulevard transformation set sights on Piedmont
From this week's Atlanta Business Chronicle:
The Buckhead Community Improvement District is looking at duplicating many of the streetscape improvements planned for Peachtree -- including tree-lined sidewalks and medians, traffic enhancements, bicycle lanes, pedestrian benches and new street lighting -- to a 1.5-mile section of Piedmont running from Powers Ferry and Roswell roads southeast to Pharr Road, a couple of blocks past its intersection with Peachtree.

Peachtree Boulevard utilities going down under
From this week's "The Story":
“We now have agreement. We now have a deal. We are going to start boring and going underground for the remaining utilities along the Peachtree corridor project on Monday,” Greene told the group. “We solved a lot of problems and a million-dollar problem became a $200,000 problem. We had some creative thinkers in the field. So the remaining poles from Maple Drive to the MARTA station in our phase one will be Xed out.”Buckhead CID Executive Director Scotty Greene also announced the launch of the new Peachtree Boulevard Web site.
"http://www.peachtreeboulevard.comis now operational and people can go to that site and
get weekly construction postings, as well as items to place in neighborhood
newsletters... it is kind of like monitoring a police radio."

Creative Loafing: Buckhead Rising
"The CID has been quietly working for more than a decade toward the goal of turning Buckhead's main traffic artery into a grand boulevard, complete with trees, benches and that rarest of commodities, at least in Atlanta: a landscaped median strip where its yellow line now lies."

A newly released video showcases the transformation happening in Buckhead and salutes the cooperation among public and private interests who are making the transformation possible. The video, produced by the Buckead CID, debuted at the recent "Kick-off" celebration at the Grand Hyatt in Buckhead attended by more than 500 people including Georgia Govenor Sonny Perdue.
"I know Buckhead is setting the standard," says Mayor Shirley Franklin, one of four stakeholders who share their praise for the transformation. The others are Buckhead Coalition President and former mayor Sam Massell, Regent Partners developer David Allman and Neighborhood Planning Unit activist Sally Silver.
