The Buckhead Community Improvement District today marked the completion of Phase II of the Peachtree Road transformation. The project converted a one-mile stretch of Buckhead’s main traffic artery into a signature boulevard, with granite curbing and medians, hardwood trees, seasonal color landscaping, bike lanes, wider sidewalks, modern lighting, buried utility lines, street furniture, and dedicated left turn lanes at signaled intersections.

Ribbon-Cutting Set for December 11
Buckhead will cut the ribbon on the completed Peachtree transformation on Tuesday, December 11 at 1:30 p.m. Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed is among the scheduled speakers at the event, which will take place outside the Pinnacle building across from Phipps Plaza. The completion of Phase II of the Peachtree transformation marks the end of a two-year project that took a pedestrian-unfriendly suburban arterial and created a “complete street” by adding granite curbing and medians, hardwood trees, seasonal color landscaping, bike lanes, wide sidewalks, modern lighting, buried utility lines, street furniture, and dedicated left turn lanes at signaled intersections.
Phase I of the transformation, completed in 2007, ran from just south of Piedmont to the MARTA overpass. Phase II continued north past Phipps Plaza. Together, the transformation covered more than 1.5 miles of Peachtree in Buckhead. Phase III, which is in development, will extend south on Peachtree to Shadowlawn Ave.

The 11-foot-sidewalks along Phase II of the Peachtree Boulevard transformation now extend past the Ritz Carlton. They will be set back from the road and lined with trees that will grow to provide shade for a pleasant walk to lunch. The landscaped median is nearing completion over the MARTA bridge and the meeting point with Phase I. Major activities are scheduled to be completed by fall.

Paving is the main focus for the next couple of weeks as the final dimensions of Phase II of the Peachtree Boulevard transformation become apparent to the casual eye. The sidewalks in front of Lenox Market Place are nearing completion, as is the new landscaped median between Around Lenox and Stratford Drive. We still expect major activities to be complete by fall.

A great variety of progress is taking place as we enter the final months of Phase II of the Peachtree transformation. The 11-foot-wide sidewalk pavers are complete near Dante’s Down the Hatch. The landscaped tree buffers are nearing completion at the Macy’s frontage. And mast arms holding vintage street lights now dot both sides of Peachtree.
